70s was all about disco parties and dancing to the rock ‘n’ roll of Elvis Presley. 70s fashion was a landmark in the fashion history.

Micro, Mini, midi or maxi Skirt Lengths

Mini, midi (mid-claf lenght) or maxi (full length) skirts remained popular with the women. Hot pants with white long navy socks, ultra short shorts, floral patterns and a big collar with rounded corners were in rage. Short check flared skirt, the empire style of the diamond check pattern mini dress and exotic and tropical prints gained a great popularity.

The girls were often seen donning hot pants. For the evening wear, women wore full length maxi dresses, evening trousers or glamorous halter neck catsuits, halter neck dress with maxi or above knee and longer dresses inspired by the hippy with paisley or floral patterns were successful style of the 1970s.

Flares and platform soles

The trend that defined the 70s fashion sense was flared trousers and platform soles. The flare was from the knee and worn by the men and women. It was influenced from the hippy fashion for loon pants.

The platform soles had an element of thirties retro style. It came in black and cream or brown and cream colors. It looked fashionable and worn by women and appreciated by men.

70s Punk fashion

It popularized by the Punk band, the Sex Pistols' promoter, Malcolm McLaren, and his partner, Vivian Westwood. Punk was the rejection of anything that was in good taste. The punk fashion came into limelight in 1977 and featured ripped t-shirts carrying slogans designed to provoke, bondage dresses, spiked hair, dyed in bright colors, black make up and safety pins as earrings were worn.

Jeans and the Casual Look

In 70s jeans were more relaxed and had flares. It was teamed up with printed t-shirts with wide collar, suede safari jacket and canvas shoes.

Flares, denim, long hair and cheesecloth shirts made the men’s fashion statement throughout the decade.

Kaftan

Caftans, kaftans, kimonos, muumuus, djellaba or jalabiya and other styles inspired from the Indian sub continent and Africa, were translated into 70s comfort wear. Kaftans made a powerful glamour dressing and were made in a variety of material and silver, gold or other metallic embroidered trims.

Men’s Popular Wear

Men’s 70s fashion included polyester disco pants, leisure suits, funky disco suits, 3 piece suits, vintage outerwear, collector’s disco shirts, retro sport coats jackets and vintage western shirts.
